Ubisoft has teamed up with Pathé to develop Notre-Dame on Fire, a virtual reality game based on Jean-Jacques Annaud’s documentary about the fire that affected the French cathedral in 2019.
As Variety has advanced, this experience will put players in the cathedral during the events of April 15, 2019, when the iconic cathedral was hit by fire. It’s not the first time Ubisoft has used a detailed model of Notre Dame – the cathedral was the setting for another VR experience from the studio, Notre-Dame de Paris: Journey Back in Time.
During the production of his documentary, Annaud contacted Ubisoft to help bring the experience to life. Negotiations started in 2021, and it was decided to create a short experience, as the film is scheduled for release in March 2022, and it would not be possible to develop a full game until then.
In Notre Dame on Fire, players will have to cooperate with their colleagues and navigate the cathedral while fighting the flames and rescuing the relics from the fire.
The film is slated for a March release in France, while the virtual reality experience will launch worldwide at the same time.
