It seems EA has decided to ditch the FIFA branding. According to unconfirmed information, this year’s edition of the football series will be released under a completely different name.
This is what Jeff Grubb from VentureBeat says, as reported by PC GamesN. A reputable journalist spoke about the sports series on the air of the latest episode of the author’s podcast.
The editor argues that FIFA 23 will be released under two names – EA Sports Football Club or EA Sports FC. He notes that he is unsure what title Electronic Arts will ultimately choose, but the company uses both in internal talks. Moreover, it does not exclude that the publisher will choose another variant just before the premiere.
The reason for the change is, of course, financial issues. We have known for some time that EA cannot agree with FIFA to extend the license agreement. The soccer federation expects twice as much money as before.
Information provided by Grubb suggests that the entities failed to sign a new contract. The current one expires after this year’s World Championships in Qatar, which will start in November.
Interestingly, this is not the first time we hear about one of the names mentioned. A few months ago, Electronic Arts registered the EA Sports FC trademark. However, the title is also an abbreviation of EA Sports Football Club, which was used to determine the system of rewards unlocked for earned points (the solution was abandoned in 2020).
