Every season brings news, and this one, without a doubt, could not be an exception, starting with the King’s Canyon map that makes a return to the ranked match rotation.
The map that’s been here since it all started is getting more attention from Respawn. There has been a huge update regarding the color palette, and everything is brighter and brighter. However, the biggest shakes were not in the visual part but the content on the battlefield.
If you’ve played since the first seasons, you’ll be able to remember that the map has already undergone several changes. One of the most controversial was the destruction of Thunderdome and Skull Town in season 5 at the hands of Loba. Fast forward now, the Syndicate’s operation to rebuild King’s Canyon is complete, leaving the ground ready for the Apex Games with the addition of the new Relic point of interest and increasing the amount of land mass.
Cage suffered a reduction in the playable area, as it dominated that part of the map too much, leading to overly prolonged battles. Broken Relay was not giving the expected results as a point of interest and received new buildings, giving it a new face and more loot.
The developers of Apex Legends ensured that the focus, when it comes to working on a map, is to take into account its health, promoting a good pace of play, balanced landings, and a good dispersion of items on the ground. These King’s Canyon enhancements also encourage players to make proactive rather than reactive rotation decisions.
Finally comes the level cap expansion
It’s not the first time this has happened. When the game was released, the level cap was 100, with around 30 free packs.
In the first year, the goal was raised to level 500 and allowed people to purchase around 200 packs for free. Now, with the arrival of season 14 comes the addition of new levels to climb in a kind of Prestige where we will have the chance to climb to level 500 three more times, essentially raising the barrier to 2000 levels, something that will provide nothing more, no less than 544 packs in total.
Suppose you are familiar with the Heirloom system. In that case, you know that each player will be granted access to an Heirloom just by playing (i.e., without spending any money), which is much anticipated by the community.
Are new weapons available on the ground?
I should start by saying that, on the part of Respawn, it has already been confirmed that they are not thinking of putting any new weapons in the game just for the sake of it or to have new content. Inserting a new weapon in the game’s meta will always be necessary to fit in with what’s available. Still, it can be said that the changes in what includes weapons weren’t that basic.
To start, the controversial Wingman is no longer a weapon with heavy bullets and starts using sniper bullets. This change balances the amount of ammunition the player has in the inventory. But that’s not all; Wingman once again receives the illustrious Skullpiercer, one of the favorite items for fans. As you know, this hop-up works on Longbow and will also be supported on 30-30 Repeater starting this season.
The Eva-8, falling into disuse, transformed with great impact, starting with its increased fire rate and now receiving the opportunity to wear stocks, thus improving its handling and reload speed. To help the situation, the Double Tap item is once again available on the ground, which works not only on the Eva-8 but also on the G7 Scout.
Like the Volt, the G7 Scout is now out of the box, with Bowcek and Rampage in their places. This will undoubtedly shake up the way the game is played and what players have in mind when hunting for weapons.
Another unexpected change is the move from Spitfire to light bullets, offering more of an endgame option to those disadvantaged in this respect compared to heavy bullets.
Another addition that worries the way of playing is the new Laser Sights, an item that will fit in the barrel of submachine guns and pistols. It drastically reduces the dispersion of bullets when fired without aiming, thus distancing the use of an SMG compared to an assault rifle. As with the scopes, players can choose the color of the laser, making it easier for people with color blindness to be accessible.
To finish the topic of weapons, we could not fail to mention the infamous Charge Rifle, which will not be removed as many asked, not even adjusted. Eric Canavese (Chief Weapons Director) says they are listening for feedback and are actively thinking about what they can do about this situation, but there are no plans for the near future.
But it’s not all bad news for those who like change.
The golden Knockdown Shield was one of the community’s most discussed items, and Respawn decided to take action. This item thus loses its famous ability to allow the player to revive itself upon death and gains the ability of the golden backpack, which grants the player the opportunity to revive a teammate with 100 more health than usual. The new ability for the golden backpack is called Deep Pockets, and it gives the player the ability to carry more large healing items with them, be they Medic Kits, Batteries, or Phoenix Kits.
What does the future hold for us?
The team communicated that they continue to work hard to bring progression across platforms. Still, it’s a pretty complex issue due to how the game was initially built without considering that possibility.
Another option players want to see come to fruition is offering gifts to friends, be it coins or skins, something that Evan Nikolich (Director of Design) has confirmed that they are actively looking for solutions to make this opportunity possible.
As for PVE missions, as we saw earlier, for example, the Bloodhound in season 10, Respawn made it clear that there is no great chance of them returning as they are focused on the competitive and multiplayer aspects. But they did not fail to allude to the fact that these same missions could be presented through other means or products.
The most attentive know that a game in the world of Apex Legends is currently in the development phase, which has already been confirmed that it is not Titanfall 3.
As far as this season 14 is concerned, there will still be more changes that were not mentioned, but that will be available in the update details, so stay tuned. By the looks of it, there will be more changes to both the map and the weapons and probably the characters, including the new legend that we can already see in the trailers.
