The Schell Games team said that it plans to launch its combat roguelike Until You Fall in this fall on PlayStation VR and Oculus platforms. In this game, fantasy merges with synthwave: the main character becomes the god of the sword and gets the opportunity to smash hordes of magical monsters against the backdrop of acidic neon landscapes.
By the way, Schell Games’ previous action game I Expect You To Die has had great success on virtual reality platforms, especially on the self-contained Oculus Quest helmet. Until You Fall is also being created with an eye on the Quest alongside PlayStation VR.
Evil and dangerous creatures swarm in the unkind lands of Rokar. But you can stop them, champion! You are very strong, Rune Knight. You are a martial artist. You are the god of the sword, says the project description. The team claims to have spent many hours trying to faithfully convey the mighty warrior’s feelings in Until You Fall.
All the elements of Until You Fall, from weapons and abilities to the level of health and characteristics of enemies, are designed to make the player feel like a mighty champion in armor. At an early stage of development, it was already decided to introduce the possibility of developing skills and expanding a powerful arsenal. Weapons vary in weight, damage, special moves, and superpowers. Combining different types of barrels gives certain advantages and allows you to express yourself through your fighting style.
Until You Fall was initially created with an eye on virtual reality, which provided more immersion for the player. For example, blocking and repelling attacks requires precise positioning and forces you to change stance. The wider the weapon’s swing, the more damage done, it works for the entertainment and cinematography of heroic battles. To receive a reward (new abilities) after the battle, you need to crush the crystals in your palms while feeling your hands’ power.
Each victory in Until You Fall grants upgrades and abilities, allowing you to challenge even stronger enemies. In the course of the passage, a game resource called ether is accumulated, which is spent on strengthening the champion, improving the existing weapon, and obtaining a new one. Battles allow you to find out the weaknesses of enemies and develop tactical techniques that will help you defeat your opponents on your next attempt.
In the coming months, the developers promise to share new details of Until You Fall. The project is in early access on Steam and has an extremely positive rating (out of more than 1,100 reviews, over 96% are positive). It is also available via the Oculus Store.
