Keiichiro Toyama said he would like to return to producing a psychological horror game someday, like his classic Silent Hill.
In a Q&A session about his new studio, Bokeh Game Studio, Toyama explained that he hopes to one day return to creating something similar to Silent Hill. However, he is now focused on producing something with more action, as is Slitterhead, the first game from his new studio.
“I want to one day do something around the classic themes of psychological horror like I did with Silent Hill,” he said.
“However, I prefer to do this when I’m working with really limited resources, like budget or having to focus on just one individual. We currently have employees with the capacity to work with action. I want to leverage their skills to move in another direction. .”
“Still, I also want to do something more personal someday,” he concluded.
Slitterhead has action and combat sequences, but it also involves more psychological horror. “I wanted a game that could be enjoyed for its action, but whose concept didn’t just revolve around killing enemies,” Toyama explained. “It creates conflicts with the mind and makes players reluctant to get into certain fights. I want to achieve both action and drama with this game.”
So while Slitterhead isn’t like Silent Hill, there’s still more to the game than just fighting monsters that devour humans. Bokeh intends to use the horror to “deepen the sense of immersion” and won’t just focus on the blood.
Toyama previously said that remaking Silent Hill would be more difficult than recent Resident Evil remakes. Perhaps, then, we can hope for a spiritual sequel to it.
