SEGA has a special broadcast scheduled for this week, where a “new project” with a “retro theme” will be unveiled, which immediately raised speculation about a possible new mini-console.
The information came in a tweet from the official SEGA channel in Japan, with the following message: “Urgent notice! Live broadcast to announce a new project, June 3.
As part of the broadcast, we can count on the presence of some notables from the Japanese giant, from the beginning Hiroyuki Miyazaki and Yosuke Okunari. The tweet adds the question: “What could this mean?” Adding to it is a Mega Drive controller in chocolate.
The presence of Miyazaki and Okunari hints at the announcement of yet another mini-console, similar to the small Mega Drive that SEGA announced in 2019. For the past 15 years, Okunari has worked almost exclusively on the company’s retro re-releases, while Miyazaki has been the project lead for Mega Drive Mini. With rumors of a possible mini-Dreamcast, SEGA fans are allowed to dream.
In an interview with Famitsu magazine after the release of Game Gear Mini, which unfortunately was exclusive to Japanese territory, Okunari stated that he wants the next project to include hardware with greater potential.
“I think we can opt for a concept close to the Mega Drive Mini for the next one. If I have to name names, it could be an SG-1000 Mini or Dreamcast Mini.”
