During the E3 conference organized by Limited Run Games, it was confirmed that the first chapter of the River City Girls series would soon receive a PS5 port, where it will also be available for purchase in a brand new retail version. Additionally, development studio WayForward and publisher Arc Systems Works have officially announced two more installments in the series, due out in 2021 and 2022.
As for the first chapter, we remind you that River City Girls is a horizontal scrolling beat ’em up released in September 2019 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC (via Steam). The title sees Misako and Kyoko, the two protagonists, fight against hordes of criminals to save the lives of their respective boyfriends, Kunio and Riki, heroes of River City High, kidnapped by a mysterious organization. The game was well-received by critics and is now ready to land on PS5 in digital and physical editions.
During the show, Limited Run Games also presented the two new chapters of the series. The first, River City Girls Zero, is the localized version of Shin Nekketsu Koha: Kunio-tachi no Banka, the 1994 title taken as inspiration to make the first chapter. River City Girls Zero will be released in 2021 on Nintendo Switch and “other platforms.”
The second chapter announced is River City Girls 2, out in the course of 2022 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One, and Switch. The new title comes as a direct sequel to the first part and will see the return of the four protagonists plus a handful of new characters. It will also be possible to play the game in cooperative mode for two players for the first time.
