Veterans PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita have received a new firmware update, which, among other things, changes several of the options available to their users, including the end of the possibility of creating a new PSN account through their respective systems.
The PlayStation 3 version is 4.89, while the PlayStation Vita version is 3.74. It is another step toward discontinuing online support on “Legacy” systems, requiring users to use an external device, such as a smartphone, to create a new account on the PlayStation online platform (via VGC).
The two systems were “under fire” when Sony announced that it would no longer be possible to purchase games through their respective digital stores. Several of the measures have since been changed in response to community reactions, but the path is more or less inevitable with the transition of generations.
Fortunately, Sony is more committed to preserving video games, namely through the new PlayStation Plus. Still, in the case of Vita, for example, it is more difficult to guarantee a convenient port, which would always have difficulty imitating capabilities such as the touchscreen of the handheld console.
For that same reason, a reference to PlayStation Vita has been absent from Sony’s official communication about the new Plus, which is expected to give gamers access to a large part of the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 library.
