Sony has announced that it has acquired the UK-based Firesprite studio as the latest of its PlayStation Studios developers. The developer was founded in 2012 by former members of SIE Studio Liverpool, the team behind WipEout, after being shut down by Sony.
The studio, including many employees employed as part of Studio Liverpool, is officially an integral part of the “PlayStation Studios family.” Before the acquisition, Firesprite was looking for staff for two titles: a “huge revolutionary multiplayer shooter and an ambitious blockbuster adventure with dark hues and a strong narrative imprint.”
The head of PlayStation Studios – Hermen Hulst – announced the acquisition on the PlayStation blog, stating:
“After several years of close collaboration on several games, including The Playroom (PS4) and The Playroom VR (PS VR), I couldn’t be happier to welcome Firesprite to the PlayStation Studios family as our fourteenth studio. Many Firesprite members come from SIE’s Liverpool Studio and we are thrilled to welcome them.”
“Firesprite is a creative and ambitious studio, outstanding in creating incredible experiences that truly show the potential of our hardware. The technical and creative capabilities of the team will be key to growing our stellar catalog of exclusive games and I think you’ll be excited about what’s to come.”
We hope to find out soon the fruits of this new acquisition; maybe PlayStation Showcase could be the right opportunity. Stay tuned!
