Dead or Alive 5, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and other PS3 video games have popped up on the PS5 online store by surprise, suggesting the implementation of backward compatibility on Sony’s next-gen console. Mark Cerny, Lead System Architect of PS5, had just registered a patent for the backward compatibility of PS5 approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office just a few days ago. With the rumors about Project Spartacus more and more insistent, the appearance of PS3 video games on the PS Store may anticipate Sony’s willingness to implement this feature.
PS5 can currently only play last-gen and next-gen content, while for PS3, only video games available in the PlayStation Now catalog can be played. According to several users, the appearance of PS3 video games on the PS Store could be a simple visual bug. Given that already in the past, it has happened that PS Now video games have mistakenly appeared on the online store. Still, curiously Dead or Alive 5 is not available in the European catalog of the subscription service.
To date, it is difficult to say whether this is a bug or a clue regarding the introduction of backward compatibility, but the rumors of the last few days make the second option quite credible. In all cases, the PS3 video games that have appeared on the PS5 online store cannot be purchased, so at the moment, it is just simple speculation.
