Konami has announced the definitive suspension of the online services of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on Xbox 360 and PS3. The first step took place today with the closure of the game purchase system, but the servers will go permanently offline in 2022, and Metal Gear Online will no longer be available. The Phantom Pain, however, will remain playable offline. On PS4, Xbox One, and PC, the online features seem to remain active for the time being.
Konami has announced that the online services for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be closed on PS3 and Xbox 360, with the first step today.
A notice on the Konami website reads: “Thank you for playing METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN. We regret to inform our users that online services for METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 will be terminated on 2022-05-31 6:00 (UTC).”
While the main game Phantom Pain will still be playable offline, the included Metal Gear Online spin-off will no longer be playable on those consoles. According to Konami, the first step in the process begins today with the closure of the game purchase system. Then, on November 30, the DLC for Metal Gear Online will no longer be available for purchase.
The next step will be on March 1, 2022, when the game will no longer be available on the PS3 or Xbox 360 digital stores. Finally, on May 1, 2022, the entire online service will be terminated, which means that players will no longer connect to any online features.
In its notice, Konami assures players: “While the online service will end the main game will still playable offline.”
Please also note that no refunds will be made for purchased in-game items. It would appear that the PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions of the game will retain their full functionality online for now.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was released worldwide on September 1, 2015, for PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC.
