You can find a set of starting tips for the Mafia Definitive Edition game on this page of the guide. Our hints and tips concern, among others, fighting, exploring the game world, and joining missions.
You can freely change the difficulty level
The game will ask you to select the difficulty level when starting the campaign. If this is your first encounter with Mafia 1 or you don’t have a lot of experience with Mafia 1 games, please consider selecting the normal difficulty level. If you don’t want to complete the missions to be easy, choose the high difficulty level. Choice of the classic difficulty level, not a good idea to complete a rimejku for the first time. It requires a perfect game and may require frequent repetition of parts of the mission.
In addition to setting one of the four “main” difficulty levels, you can also select additional modifiers, such as activate a simulation driving model or set the aiming assistant’s sensitivity. We have discussed all these options on a separate page Difficulty levels of our guide.
You don’t have to stay on the previously selected difficulty level until the end of the game. Each setting can be changed from the pause menu, and it is a good idea if, for example, you have great difficulties with winning a battle or completing a chase. However, be aware that changing the difficulty level may block you from accessing a trophy and make it difficult or impossible for you to get “platinum.”
During the fights, be sure to use covers
Curtains are a novelty in Mafia 1 Remake, as the original version of the game did not have any mechanics allowing you to hide behind objects from the environment. Always avoid firing while standing in an open space, because you will become a specific target for your opponents. In this way, one can very easily and very quickly get seriously injured or even die.
If possible, choose indestructible curtains, e.g., walls of buildings. Hiding behind a fence or a small box is riskier because enemies can destroy this type of cover. Of course, this mechanism works both ways, so look for opportunities to deprive enemies of the cover they are hiding behind.
Some enemies can be eliminated with surprise attacks
There is a stealth option in Mafia Definitive Edition, which can be tested for the first time during the third story mission. The game won’t allow you to sneak in every mission and fight, but if the nearby enemies aren’t aware of Tommy’s presence, it’s worth getting rid of their stealth attacks.
You can activate the stealth mode by pressing the button. From now on, look for an opportunity to sneak up on enemies from the side or from behind. Pressing the elimination buttons will allow you to get rid of the enemy silently and without alerting the area.
Rely on melee dodges
In some missions and single fights, you will have to fight hand-to-hand. Focus on pressing the dodge button before the enemy’s melee attack reaches Tommy, i.e., before the circle visible on the screen shrinks completely. Correctly performed dodge opens the possibility of counterattacking, which can deal more damage than standard melee attacks.
It is worth remembering two things – apart from fists, you can use melee weapons (e.g., baseball bats) for melee fights, and it is not always mandatory. You can quickly move away from the unarmed opponent and shoot him.
Use the mini-map
The mini-map is always visible in the lower right corner of the screen, which is a major improvement over the original game release. The mini-map has several important uses:
- View a suggested route to your destination without having to go to the whole city screen. This is especially helpful in those stages that involve, for example, reaching a specific location within the time limit.
- Displaying enemy icons – they are marked in red. Helping yourself with the mini-map indications reduces the risk that some enemies manage to sneak up close to Tommy and attack him by surprise.
- Displaying icons of police officers and police cars. These are efficient issues in those missions and scenes where you have to run away from the police or lose the police pursuit and avoid detection.
- Marking of first aid kits and supplies. You can quickly locate first aid points and ammo boxes.
- Marking important places and secrets. Important locations to be explored are marked e.g., in the A Trip to the Country mission. The collectible markers make it easier to build your collection of secrets.
Signposts showing the way to the destination
Virtual arrows/road signs can also help you reach your current destination without any problems. They may appear if you have a destination set. They are accommodating, especially when traveling around the more built-up districts of Lost Heaven. You can easily determine where exactly you need to turn to continue traveling along the designated route.
It is worth noting that the appearance of virtual road signs can be turned off in the game options if, for example, they interfere with your perception of the world. We do not advise you to take such a step when you are just getting to know the city or missions where you need to get to your destination quickly.
Look for first aid points and ammo boxes
First aid points and ammunition crates can be found in locations where battles take place during the missions. They are also marked on the mini-map, making it even easier to locate them.
Each first aid post and each ammo box can only be used once. As a result, reach them only if Tommy has been seriously injured or if your ammo reserves are running low. It is worth mentioning here that weapons and ammunition can also be found on killed enemies’ bodies. It is always worth checking the area after winning a battle.
When traveling around the city, try to avoid breaking the rules
In Mafia Definitive Edition, it is easier than in many other similar productions to be in law enforcement officers’ crosshairs. Officers can react to committing crimes and breaking traffic rules. Their default responses are somewhat limited, but you can intentionally increase them by selecting the Simulation setting for Police Response in the options menu.
If you don’t want to unnecessarily attract the attention of the policemen and start unwanted chases, do the following:
- Do not exceed the speed limits – The game has a built-in speed limiter, and when you turn it on, your vehicle will never go too fast.
- Do not attack civilians – This applies to direct attacking people on the street, hitting pedestrians with cars, and throwing drivers out of their vehicles. If you need a new vehicle, it’s best to use a lockpick and steal a parked machine.
- Do not collide with other vehicles – The traffic in the game is not very dense, but still, avoid driving too close to other cars and watch out for vehicles leaving side streets or appearing at intersections.
- Do not cross the intersections with red light – If you are in no rush, wait for the light to change. Waiting for the green light is not very long.
The simulation driving model is a lot of fun, but it makes it difficult to complete the mission
The Mafia Definitive Edition allows you to choose between the standard and simulation driving model. By default, the normal driving mode is active. Setting the simulation driving model is an additional option for those who want the game’s vehicles to drive more realistically.
Choosing a simulation driving model causes, among others, the fact that vehicles skid more easily, do not change direction with great ease, and have a longer braking distance. This can increase the fun of the game and make it difficult for missions in which important activities are performed with the use of vehicles. For example, these include chases, winning a race in the Pure Game mission, or reaching the indicated places within the time limit.
If you don’t want to make the game too difficult for yourself, bring back a more arcade driving model while playing this type of scene. Fortunately, this setting is available in the options menu all the time. You don’t have to complete the entire game with the driving model selected at the very beginning.
There are collectibles in Mafia Definitive Edition
One of the new features in the Mafia Definitive Edition is finding secrets that were absent from the original game release. Information on the types of collectibles is available on the Types of secrets page, and the places of finding them are presented in our world atlas.
If you plan to get 100% of the secrets, look around in all newly visited locations, both those with allies and opponents (in this case, it is best only after winning fights). The collectibles can be additionally marked on the mini-map, so it is also worth checking it from time to time. Unfortunately, the secrets in the game do not have any practical use, although they are related to the platinum trophy, and you can check each collectible (e.g., a comic book) in more detail.
Use a lockpick to break into parked cars
Mafia 1 Remake has the option of stealing cars, but throwing drivers out of stopped cars involves a high risk of attracting policemen’s attention and starting a police chase. A better idea is to steal parked cars – in this case; you can choose between breaking the window on the driver’s side or using a lockpick (Ralphie will teach Tommy to use a lockpick in one of the first story missions).
Using a lockpick is the best option because you won’t attract people’s attention in the area. Use the option to throw the driver out of the car only if you are in a hurry or if you encounter a scarce car model and want to add it to your garage. It is worth noting that in many story missions “for free,” you will receive a car, or you will be able to choose one of the vehicles from Tommy’s garage. Stealing another car can then be completely optional for completing the mission.
