If you are a fan of FromSoftware’s work, you will surely be keeping an eye on Lies of P, the soulslike dark fantasy starring Pinocchio to be released on PC and next-gen in 2023. The game returned to show itself with a spectacular gameplay trailer last 9 November. Just a few hours ago, the game’s producer spoke to Kotaku’s microphones, revealing a lot of new information about this interesting project.
“Yes, we have heard the comparisons with Bloodborne, ” explained Ji-won Choi, lead producer at Neowiz, “we are honored that players compare our experience to a similar game, but any references to Bloodborne. They are not intentional. However, the fact that soulslike inspired us is undeniable; not surprisingly, all our team members are avid fans of FromSoftware’s games. “
Choi continued the speech by stating that more than the setting or the storytelling, the inspiration from FromSoftware games is linked to the very high quality of the gameplay, particularly the movement and combat system of the various Miyazaki projects.
Furthermore, the manufacturer confirmed that among the mechanics borrowed from the soulslike, “there is certain death management of the protagonist and the difficulty level.”
So we can expect only one level of challenge, the loss of all experience points once defeated, and perhaps a system of checkpoints similar to bonfires.
Choi stated that the story works are at about 50%, while the overall development is at 30%. Once the work is done, the studio will also need around six months to complete the polishing work, so the game is much more likely to arrive in late 2023 than in the first half. The studio naturally wants the game to be flawless and the movements to always be fluid, which is why Lies of P will not come out on last-gen consoles, but only on PS5, Xbox Series X / S, and PC.
As for the story, Choi stated the following: “Our goal was to write a story that everyone knew, or at least familiar to most players. Besides, we didn’t want classic medieval dark fantasy, and we needed characters charismatic. Pinocchio seemed to us the ideal story, and it lends itself well to the idea of a soulslike.
The adventure will be set in the dark and brutal world of Krat, where Pinocchio is on a journey to find his teacher Geppetto, with the “goal of becoming human. During the journey, the player will be able to talk to NPCs and tell lies, and based on the choices made, the protagonist can become more human, and different scenarios will occur until one of the endings is reached.”
The gameplay will be typical of the soulslike, dodging, timing-based attacks, stamina control, and continuous level-ups. There will be at least thirty basic weapons in the game, and Pinocchio’s left arm can be modified with eight different Sekiro-style gadgets, including a grappling hook. And in case you asked yourself the question, Pinocchio’s nose will not grow, as the studio was particularly keen to make a “cool” design, as Choi describes it, for the protagonist of the story.
Lies of P will arrive in 2023 on PS5, Xbox Series X / S, and PC. New information on the game will be shared in the course of 2022.
