Video game studios Asmodev (Ultimate Summer, Priest Simulator) and Gaming Factory (Gunslingers & Zombies, Human Farm) recently announced their joint title Inquisitor: The Hammer of Witches, which has changed its name and is now known as Mercyful Flames. Together with the announcement, the first teaser trailer for the game was released.
According to the game’s developer blog on Steam, the reason for the name change is because the original title sounded “extremely awkward,” as if “The Lord of the Rings were called The Hobbits: A Magical Journey Through a Fairy Land.” Otherwise, development seems to be proceeding as expected, with the game still due for PC and Nintendo Switch release.
The plot of Mercyful Flames doesn’t seem to have changed. The game is marketed as a “detective adventure role-playing game” in which you take on a former occultist role and now an inquisitor from the Middle Ages. The press release mentions that you will have to become a member of the “bloodthirsty church” to save someone you love very much. As you travel, you will encounter dozens of horror-filled missions in which you can bribe, fight, explore, and even torture.
Your position and skills as an inquisitor make you a better investigator – a skill you will use a lot to break people’s wills to reveal their darkest secrets. Fire will be your best weapon, and you will be presented with a choice: either use it with mercy and help save the souls of the enemies of the Church or burn everything around in your quest to become the Great Witch Hunter. On the other hand, you can also ask for God’s grace to help you develop your skills and ask for help to help you in your investigation and find the one you love. Overall, the game aims to provide you with a “slow but addictive exploration of human meanness.”
The details of the game are still rather scarce at the moment, but the developers state that they will appear in the future.
