The Guerrilla Games guys are back in record time with an all-new insight into Horizon Forbidden West, this time focusing on Aloy’s new abilities and the enemies players will encounter in the Forbidden West. A little over two months after the game’s launch, here are new details on humans and Machines that we will have to face during the journey in the forgotten lands, now even more intelligent and full of resources.
“In Horizon Forbidden West, the tools at her disposal offer a wide variety of tactics to engage physically stronger opponents, from armored humans to enormous machines, but they do not distort her identity. First, we wanted to deepen the gameplay and reward the players’ skills by introducing new things like melee combos and Valiant Charges.
Secondly, we wanted to accommodate various playstyles to increase the freedom of choice further. Players can adapt their tactics by using new weapons and new outfits to upgrade at workbenches. Finally, we wanted to create challenging enemies that would encourage players to use the entire repertoire of skills. Brand new Machines and highly advanced human enemies will continue to raise the bar throughout the game! “
The AI team, Guerrilla explains, has made a great contribution to improving the combat system, especially to increase the level of challenge. Chief AI programmer Arjen Beij spoke about these improvements stating the following:
“We made enemies more authentic by giving them smoother and more realistic movements. For example, when they (or Aloy’s companions) traversed uneven terrain, the AI in Horizon Zero Dawn was already able to adapt to the conformation of the terrain dynamically. Still, now the behavioral routines also include the ability to jump and climb.
During the game, the AI can look for shortcuts, whereas it would have limited itself to making long detours in the past. Another example is that many Machines can now swim and even dive to follow Aloy underwater. Amphibious enemies can also dive or emerge from the water with jumps that, if we’re so unlucky, can be combined with attacks.” In short, the danger is always lurking, and Aloy must be ready for any eventuality.
“There are many ways that players can prepare for battle,” added Perain, “by equipping Aloy with the most effective clothes and weapons, for example, or by using the workbench to upgrade equipment and unlock bonuses, specialties, and ammunition types. As in Horizon Zero Dawn, the scanning mechanic is useful for highlighting opponents’ weaknesses and their movement routines. Then it’s important to craft potions and keep the bags well-stocked in case things turn for the worse. Finally, the new tools for exploring scenarios can be combined with combat mechanics to perform spectacular actions. “
“We hope players have a lot of fun taking on these enemies,” concludes Arjen. “Faced with far more numerous opponents, each player must strive to understand how to overcome the challenge posed by each of them. Characterized by specific movements and attacks, the Machines are formidable but always manageable enemies for players ready to take control of the situation and adapt their tactics to win. “
