FIFA has assured that it is already working on a rival for the Electronic Arts soccer game, which will abandon the license by that name and be renamed EA Sports FC from July 2023.
The president of the association, Gianni Infantino, has insisted that “the only real and authentic game with the name of FIFA will be the best available for fans of video games and football.”
According to Infanino “the esports and interactive gaming sector is on a path of unrivaled growth and diversification. FIFA’s strategy ensures that we make the most of all future options and guarantee various products and opportunities for players, fans, association members, and partners.
FIFA will now adopt a non-exclusive licensing model for games based on its brand. It is currently negotiating with various studios and publishers to develop new projects under the FIFA name.
The first of them will be a “non-simulator game” that will arrive in the third quarter of this year and set in the World Cup in Qatar. According to FIFA, it will offer “new interactive experiences,” although they have not given more details.
Other games and “virtual experiences” based on the World Cup will be published after it, and work is also being done on projects set for next year’s Women’s World Cup.
The highlight will be a new soccer simulator, which should go on sale in 2024. It is unknown which company is bidding for the rights and will be in charge of it.
Electronic Arts have announced this afternoon, as has been rumored for months, its decision to put aside the FIFA license that it had been using since 1993. Despite this, this will only affect the name of the game and the possibility of playing in its simulator, the World Cup, since they continue to retain the rights to the names and image of the players, teams, and regional competitions.
