Mediatonic has announced that the popular battle royale Fall Guys will go free-to-play starting next June 21.
The transition to this new business model will coincide with the expected arrival of the game on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Their versions will be published on the same day; a native version will also arrive for PlayStation 5 and the debut on the Epic Games Store.
The move to free-to-play will cause the game to restart its seasons on June 21 with what the developers have called Season 1: Free for All, in which “lots of new challenges and rewards” are promised.
Recall that Epic Games bought Tonic Games Group, the parent company of Mediatonic, in March of last year. Since then, the transition to the free-to-play model was expected, something that Epic already did with Rocket League after acquiring Psyonix.
As compensation for users who currently own the game, where it has worked with a traditional purchase model (even though much of its success is due to its inclusion in PlayStation Plus), Mediatonic will deliver the Legacy Pack, with various cosmetic elements and the first free season pass.
Fall Guys will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on June 21, with cross-play and progression between all platforms. What is unknown is the future of the current version for Steam after the move to the Epic Games Store, although it is expected that we will have more details about it in the coming weeks.
