In Diablo 4’s regular quarterly development update, Blizzard revealed that players would be able to look forward to “5 different regions and hundreds of dungeons” and shared details about the design of each zone.
In what is the first quarterly update of 2022, director Joe Shely spoke about the design philosophy of the world of Sanctuary.
Art director Chris Ryder suggested that Diablo 4 will include “five distinct regions with hundreds of dungeons” in the post. The environments were created through a darker, more realistic interpretation than previous releases.
Regarding Diablo 4’s open world, environment artist Matt McDaid revealed that the team created a world “where players can go from coast to coast or even glacial peaks.”
These areas range from the bleak Scosglen Coast to the secluded Orbei Monastery. The team also highlighted the Kyovashad colony as “oppressive and cold.” To all this are added more than 150 dungeons worldwide and several underground biomes.
Diablo IV dungeons will have some new features, including transitions between different zones, without any loading time. Brian Fletcher, director of environmental art, clarified that the team wants to create dungeons that offer a fresh experience with each visit.
“Imagine running through a crypt, only to find a hole in the wall that leads you into a vast network of underground caverns. All while maintaining the random layouts that change with each dungeon visit,” explained Fletcher.
There is still no release date for Diablo 4, having already been pushed back once in November.
