Aksys Games has announced Blazing Strike, a new 2D fighting game inspired by old arcade classics. The game mixes classic elements with more modern game mechanics. Blazing Strike is scheduled for next year on PC, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
If you’ve been lucky enough to play arcade classics in the now extinct arcades, you’re sure to be familiar with 2D fighting games made in pixel art and sprites. That era is long gone, but many of those games have found a second life in re-editions and remastered versions. However, it’s been a long time since we’ve actually seen a new fighting game with that same style.
But today, everything is about to change thanks to Aksys Games and developer RareBreed Makes Games, who have announced Blazing Strike, a 2D fighting game inspired by arcade classics that will be released next year. The game is set to mix classic elements and new game mechanics.
“As the interest in fighting games continues to grow, we’re excited to see a title that explores new ideas in fun and creative ways while tipping its hat to grandfathers of the genre,” said Akibo Shieh, founder, and CEO of Aksys Games.
“I was always fond of classic fighting games and I wanted to make a fun fighting game with an emphasis on mobility,” said Mark Chung, founder of RareBreed Makes Games. “Our goal is to create an homage to the classic pixel art-based 2D fighters, but with updated game mechanics that not only will bring nostalgia to 90’s arcade kids but will offer something new and entertaining to all gamers, regardless of whether they have played fighting games before.”
Blazing Strike features a 4-button system with six normal attacks: light, medium, heavy punches and kicks, and three defense moves: block, guard, and parry. A Rush Trigger enables fighters to execute fast-paced attacks and movements, but using it will slowly drain the Rush Meter, sending the character into a temporary groggy state. This allows players to execute exciting combos while having to manage the Rush Meter. The game will include three play modes: Story Mode, Arcade Mode, VS Mode, training, sparring and online match via Persona AI, and online play powered by GGPO.
In short, the game looks good, and the GGPO integration bodes well for the quality of online multiplayer. Blazing Strike is expected on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC in the spring of 2022.
