On Tuesday, May 11, the Republic Of Gamers (ROG) For Those Who Dare: Unleash The Tiger Inside virtual experience event took place. Galip Fu, ROG’s Global Marketing Director, made some important announcements.
‘Tigers’ were the central theme throughout the presentation, and, according to ROG, they also symbolize the company’s philosophy: quiet but extremely powerful. The choice for ‘tiger’ also coincides with the most recent line of Intel Core i-CPUs, which bears the name ‘Tiger Lake.’ Although the eleventh generation of Intel CPUs has been available for a while until now, a dedicated ‘mobile’ version capable of delivering 45W of power lacks full justice to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 line.
That was rectified by the unveiling of the Intel 11th Gen Core H line. In this presentation, it seemed that ROG and Intel collaborated more than ever, as AMD Ryzen CPUs were absent throughout the presentation.
The eye-catchers during the event were two new, far-reaching updates to gaming laptops. First and foremost, there is the ROG Zephyrus S17. This gaming laptop has an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 GPU that goes up to 140W and an Intel Core-i9 11900H CPU as the most expensive model. It is promised that there is not only an eye for gaming performance but also video editing.
Since AMD CPUs are traditionally better for video editing and multitasking, it remains to be seen whether the Intel 11th Gen Core H line can successfully compete. In terms of screen, you choose the Zephyrus S17 between a 165Hz QHD screen with G-Sync, or a 4K 120Hz display. There would also be a 1080p webcam this time, which was previously missing from ROG gaming laptops.
The Zephyrus S17 now also has a mechanical keyboard, which makes a huge difference, as you could read in the ROG Strix SCAR 17 (2021) gaming laptop review. Like the Zephyrus Duo 15 SE, part of the keyboard is lifted when you flip it open. However, this is not about a second screen, but about the keyboard that opens at an angle of 5 degrees to make typing more pleasant and provide better cooling. The new AAIS cooling system should also cool the very hot RTX 30 series and new CPUs more efficiently. Finally, it is clear that ROG also pays attention to audio: this new model gets six speakers with two woofers and support for Dolby Atmos surround.
The second major new update for existing gaming laptops is the Zephyrus M16. The ‘eye catcher’ on this laptop is the screen. ROG engineers have seemingly managed to incorporate one of the thinnest bezels yet in a gaming laptop. The Zephyrus M16 offers a 16-inch display in a 15-inch chassis, with an aspect ratio of 16:10. Very impressive. The display has a refresh rate of 165Hz, a response time of 3ms, and would support a brightness of up to 500 nits. As a result, this laptop should be ideal for on-the-go and outdoor use – which has been a concern for ASUS laptops until now.
The screen can also fold open completely to an angle of 180 degrees. At just 1.9 kilograms, this is also a very light laptop. ROG seems serious about its goal of making this a truly mobile device. In that respect, the keyboard is also interesting. The M16 does not have a mechanical keyboard, but it does have what ROG calls a ‘stealth type’ keyboard. According to the company, it remains consistently below 30 decibels to not disturb anyone in your area. As with the S17, the keyboard lifts a bit when opening it to be more ergonomic, which Asus calls itself the ‘ErgoLift’ technology.
The 90Wh battery should also ensure that you can continue to work on the road for a long time. Other existing ROG models will also receive upgrades because the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 and 3050Ti graphics cards will be available with some of these older models, such as the Flow X13 and the G15 and G17. It is not yet known whether these existing models will also receive upgrades in terms of CPU.
Finally, the company also unveiled ROG SLASH. This is a new section of the company that develops lifestyle products as an extension of ROG. The accessories are based on the eSports scene, gaming culture in general, Cyberpunk as the ‘foundation’ of the ROG style, and ‘Trendiness’ to combine the three previous ones. Since coding is fundamental to games, this is also reflected in the accessories, with the clothing fragments. You can expect trendy bum bags (the ‘messenger bag’ and ‘sling bag’), a large backpack, and lots of caps.
Both the ASUS ROG Zephyrus S17 and ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 will be released at the end of June 2021. Nothing is known yet about the price of both devices.
