Redd is a vendor that was introduced in the Animal Crossing New Horizons 1.2 update in April 2020 and came to your island to sell your artwork.
For fans of this series, Redd is a familiar face and a rather well-known face. That’s because – the little spoilers upfront – he can’t be fully trusted, because his merchandise isn’t always authentic.
But as the only art seller, both fake and real, you must work with him to open and then fill the Museum’s art gallery.
This guide explains how to get Redd, visit the Redd ship, open an art gallery and work on how to distinguish fake art from real art.
How to find Redd for the first time in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Redd will start appearing on your island with the arrival of the Animal Crossing New Horizons 1.2 update, which was introduced in April 2020, which also added the Leif and the Nature Day event to the game.
Just like Sahara and Label, Redd will appear on your island randomly.
There are two ways to find out he has appeared. One, Isabelle can announce her presence as part of the morning update as a “suspicious character”, but Redd can also appear without any warning. In this case, check your map to see if the ship has performed on the north coast of the island, as indicated by the icon.
Redd can also appear with other vendors. For us, he first appeared on the same day as Leif.
If you have trouble, some reports suggest that you need to talk to Blathers once after the 1.2 update arrives, where the mention of the art contribution will make it come the next day. Although it is not confirmed for everyone, whatever it is, we recommend that you talk to Blathers, then watch every day you play. He can take time, but don’t worry – Redd will appear in the end!
When Redd appears, his ship will be parked on the ‘secret’ beach at the north end of the island, behind a cliff. However, for this first visit, the ship cannot be accessed.
Instead, it would help if you tracked Redd, who is roaming the island. After you find it, he will introduce himself and sell your first artwork for 4980 Bells. Buy that. Congratulations – you are now an art collector!
How to open Art Gallery in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
With the arrival of Redd came the ability to expand the Museum to accommodate the Art Gallery. If you talk to Blathers after update 1.2, he will mention the ability to collect artwork.
The only place to get art, and thus began to expand the Museum was to meet Redd.
After you meet Redd for the first time and get your first artwork, donate to the Museum. This works the same way as Fossils – must be analyzed and then gave.
Like other areas in the Museum, at first most of the wings will be empty and require you to generously donate further pieces to fill them, from paintings to sculptures.
This requires more visits to Redd, so every time he appears on your island, be sure to visit and get new items to give to Blathers.
How to recognize fake and original Art in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Redd’s art rotation on his ship will often display forgery. Although the first artwork you got from Redd on the island is authentic (which allows you to open Art Gallery), longtime fans of this series will tell you – furthermore often not – the items are fake.
Fortunately, there are a few signs to see how you can find what is authentic and what isn’t:
- The fake ones often have a slightly odd detail or two. Because the art in Animal Crossing is usually based on real-world work, you can compare the two to find out what is different – like the game of spot differences (with expensive and embarrassing consequences if you are wrong).
- The forgery that appeared on New Horizons is different from the one in the previous game, even if the same artwork returns. For example, according to grob95 on Reddit, pieces that return like Wistful Painting will be fake if they wear star earrings. On New Leaf, he will wear a red hat. It’s time to learn how to look at counterfeiting at a glance again!
- Luckily, specific artworks don’t have fake versions at all. This means that if you see it being sold, it must be authentic! Thanks to Accadia on Reddit, we know that these items are safe to buy from the start:
- Calm Painting
- Common Painting
- Dynamic Painting
- Familiar Statue
- Flowery Painting
- Glowing Painting
- Great Statue
- Moody Painting
- Mysterious Painting
- Nice Painting
- Perfect Painting
- Proper Painting
- Sinking Painting
- Twinkling Painting
- Warm Painting
- Worthy Paint
Because you can only buy one piece of art per visit, making sure you go with something original is important. If you get fake artwork, Blathers won’t accept it, and your purchase will be in vain!
