Age of Empires is a saga with a large community of players behind it. The first two installments were so popular that many fans continue to play those installments (or their final versions) today. And that also means that many players have not needed to update their computers for a long time (for example, because they are only interested in this saga within the industry).
The point is that, whether it is your case or not, Microsoft knows about this situation and has decided to worry about all those strategy lovers who want to play Age of Empires IV and who do not have current hardware. So it will make a “minimum specs” mode available to everyone.
The announcement, which has taken place on Xbox Wire, clarifies that it will be treated in a way that will allow us to enjoy the game even without having a powerful or current team. Although, of course, that will have some disadvantages. We talked about decreased destruction, low-resolution textures, and low visual frills in general.
Additionally, it has also been confirmed that this mode will limit multiplayer to four-player battles. Here’s what the game’s executive producer, Michael Mann, has to say about this minimum spec mode:
“When looking to bring this new game to the franchise, we knew we needed to support a diverse set of PC configuration,” said Michael Mann, Executive Producer at World’s Edge. “Even looking forward to the next few years, we expect 50% or more of our player base will be playing on machines that use the low spec renderer.”
Likewise, it has also been pointed out that many players in the series continue to use laptops or computers with discrete or integrated graphics processing units (GPU). This is why they believed it essential to create this mode. Finally, the game’s technical director, Joe Pritchett, has also made an interesting reflection considering that many players with good teams might want to try this mode. The reason? Competitiveness, obviously:
“It’s worth noting that some of our competitive testers preferred the low spec renderer because its visually clearer and you get a better framerate,” said Pritchett. “So, you may want to try out different settings when you play for the first time.”
We remind you that Age of Empires 4 is released on October 28, 2021, for PC. In addition, it will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one.
